Local Historian and Native Reaches 90 Years of Age

Local Historian and Native Reaches 90 Years of Age

You will be hard-pressed to come to the town of Buckeye Lake and stop a resident on the street who does not know of Donna Braig.  She was born in Perry County and raised in nearby Hebron. Her first job was at Buckeye Lake Park when she was 14 years old.  Her life revolved around the park and her job working for the Legend “Doc” Wright in his novelty and drug sundry store.

Her love of Buckeye Lake began there and is still going strong today. She was a school teacher for 35 years at many local schools and has students who still remember her today.  At her time of retirement, she was teaching the grandchildren of her first students.

This is a photograph of Buckeye Lake native and author Donna Braig with her granddaughter and great-grandaughter.

She didn’t stop there. She was a founding member on the first Village Council of Buckeye Lake in 1983.  She served as President during her terms.  Her love of Buckeye Lake continued when she became an author with her first book, “My Buckeye Lake Story” that has sold over 9,000 copies.   Her book covers the entire history of Buckeye Lake.  Her second book, “My Buckeye Lake Memories” is about the many interesting characters and legends in the history of the Lake. She is also the founding member of the Buckeye Lake Historical Society and worked for 4 years to get it built and filled with artifacts about the area.

Donna resides on the North Bank of Buckeye Lake in her home of over 55 years.  She has begun her third book and still loves to tell the stories that made Buckeye Lake famous.  She is now doing video stories on the historical society Facebook page that have generated great interest in the “old days.”

If you are interested in contacting Donna with a past story she can be reached through the Buckeye Lake Museum website.

Donna was married to Jim Braig, native and postmaster of Buckeye Lake for 40 years.  She has two children, J-me & Robin, two granddaughters, McKenzee & Savanna, and four great-grandchildren.
